Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti will be on October 31st this year. Valmiki is also named as Adi Kavi Maharishi Valmiki. He was the first-ever Sanskrit poet in India. He’s one of the greatest works was in Hindu mythology – “Ramayana”.
Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti – Date, History, Importance & Celebration
It was dated between the 5th century BCE, the mythology consists of 24,000 verses and 7 cantos (Kandas). However, the exact date and timings of his birth are still not known but he existed in the same era as Lord Rama. Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated on Ashwin Purnima i.e. the full moon night as per the Hindu Calendars.
As per the Hindu Mythology tale – “Ramayana”, Maharishi Valmiki met Lord Rama during his exile and it is also believed that Valmiki gave Lord Rama and his wife Sita a shelter to live.
It is said that when Sita was banished by Lord Rama, Valmiki rescued her and it was the time when Sita gave birth to Lord Rama’s twins – Luv and Kush. Valmiki taught them about Ramayana during their childhood.
Digging into the history of Maharishi Valmiki, he was a highway dacoit named Ratnakara earlier. He used to used rob and kill people on highways. But when once he met Narad Muni, his life completely changed. He became a devotee of Lord Rama and started worshipping him chanting Rama Nama. He chanted Rama Nama for many years and one fine day a divine sacred voice declared him successful in his worshipping. Later, that divine voice named him Valmiki. Valmiki was the tenth baby of Pracheta. Also, he was the author of Ramayana.
Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is also referred to as Pragat Diwas. This day is celebrated with huge enthusiasm and happiness among the Hindus. People pray to Maharishi Valmiki and celebrate his birth anniversary. Devotees offer free food by setting up various stalls and they also offer prayers to Maharishi Valmiki. People decorate temples with lights and flowers. The whole atmosphere fills with happiness.
It is interesting to know that the main biggest temple of Maharishi Valmiki is situated at Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai. This temple is about 1300 years old. The area where the temple is located is known as Valmiki Nagar. It is said that once Maharishi Valmiki rested on a spot and later the temple was made on that spot in order to honor him.
