A brief history and significance of the festival:
Swami Dayanand Saraswati was more than a spiritual leader of India. He left a profound effect on Indian society. He established the Arya Samaj that gave rise to changes in the religious perception of Indians. He was a well-known scholar of the Sanskrit language and Vedic lore. He initiated the call for Swaraj as “India for Indians” in 1876. Dayananda also defied the practice of untouchability. He defied the caste system and the domination of the Brahmins in the community.
His birth name was Moolshanker, but after sannyasa initiation, he was named as Swami Dayanand Saraswati. Dayananda Saraswati spent almost twenty-five years, from 1845 to 1869, as a wandering monk in search of religious truth. He lived a life of simplicity and self-denial, completely dedicating himself to spiritual pursuits in pilgrimage sites in northern India, retreats in the Himalayan Mountains and forests. During this period he practised several forms of yoga. He wishes to reform Hinduism with new paths of devotion to God. . He expressed his viewpoints against the pointless emphasis on empty ritualism, which dictates that women are not permitted to read the Vedas. He encouraged the nation to reject superstitious beliefs like feeding the priests on birthdays and anniversaries, animal sacrifice and idol worship.
He wandered the country challenging religious priests and scholars to debate. He won continually through the strength of his opinions and knowledge of Vedas and Sanskrit. He founded the Arya Samaj. Arya Samaj gives prominence to the liberation of the Hindu society. The Arya Samaj prohibits dogma and promotes scepticism in principles that run contrary to common logic and sense. The Arya Samaj rendered valuable services to Hindu community, with his opposition to various reforms. With its resistance to several social evils, the Arya Samaj also provided beneficial services to the Hindu society.
He opposed “Purdah”, polygamy child-marriages, and the practice of “Sati” etc. The Arya Samaj founded a number of educational institutions like Kanya Gurukuls, D.A.V. Schools, Gurukuls and Colleges for the education of both the gender. He revolted against the injustice to women. The Arya Samaj practised interdining and inter-caste marriages. He believed in equality and encouraged the education of women.
