This day marks the birth anniversary of Maharaja Agrasen (Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti). He was a legendary Hindu king of Agroha and Agrawal was originated from him. Agrasen Jayanti is usually observed on the fourth day of Ashwin month according to the Hindu Calendar. In order to honor him, the Government of India launched a postage stamp in 1976 on his 5100th birth anniversary.

Uttar Pradesh state government officially declares this day as a public holiday in order to honor him. The same is the case with Haryana in North India. Also, this day has been declared as a gazetted holiday in the states of Punjab and Haryana.

People from different castes and races come together to celebrate this day with huge enthusiasm. Many social welfare events are conducted such as free medical camps, food distribution, etc. These events and functions spread a message of brotherhood, love, and equality.

Digging into the history of Maharaja Agrasen, he was a legendary Indian king of Agroha which includes the communities of Agrawal’s and Agrahari. He established the kingdom pf traders. His compassion was to stop the slaughtering animals in yajnas.
Maharaja Agrasen is considered to be the originator of the Agrahari and Agrawal community. Word “Agrawal” is the combination of two words, “Agra” means “Agrasen” and “wal” means son. It is believed that Agrawal and Agrahari are boon to society.
