Karwa Chauth Puja Story: Why is it Celebrated in India?

Karwa Chauth is celebrated all across India but mostly it is celebrated in the Northern India region. It falls on the forth day of Kartik month i.e. 4 days after Sharad Purnima or the full moon. In the year 2020, Karwa Chauth will fall on November 4th. The Puja on Karwa Chauth begins from the sunrise and ends till the moonrise. Therefore, it starts and ends on different timings in different places.

Digging into the story of Queen Veeravati, she was a beautiful queen who was a loving and only sister of seven brothers. When she got married, she performed her first fast of Karwa Chauth following her mother and sister-in-laws. Her brothers decided to have a dinner with her on the day of Karwa Chauth. She agreed but didn’t eat anything to respect the fast. Since her brothers loved her so much that they couldn’t see their sister fasting and waiting for moon to rise with empty stomach from whole day. The brothers were very disturbed to see their sister fasting and not eating anything, they decided to deceive her. They created an illusion of moon by creating a mirror image of fire with the help of Pipal tree leaves.

Then they asked their sister to break the fast. Veeravati asked her sister-in-laws to break the fast too but they said that her brothers are illusioning a image of moon and they are deceiving her. But Veeravati trusted her brothers and ignored the sister-in-laws, she broke her fast and ate food with her brothers. The moment she had her first bite, she received the news that her husband was no more. She left everything and immediately ran to her husband and on her way their she met Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. She performed the Karwa Chauth rituals under strict circumstances and with complete devotion and got her husband back to life. Parvati advised her to follow the fast carefully from next time. There are many other stories related to Karwa Chauth. But the main motiive behind every story is the women praying for health and wellness of their husbands.
